Bonfires burn along the levee
GRAMERCY - A generations old tradition continued Tuesday in St. James Parish.
The annual lighting of bonfires capped off the night for the thousands who showed up for the Christmas Eve celebration. The burning started at 7 p.m. and was followed by fireworks.
Gramercy Mayor Terry Borne's family spent more than $3,000 on their bonfire that included 450,000 firecrackers.
"The bonfire probably took us since thanksgiving to build. We finished about a week ago. Today alone, just to hang the fireworks, took most of the day," Borne said.
The tradition is said to have started as a way to light the way for Papa Noel or Santa Clause.
