Boaters cruise Amite River after opening

PORT VINCENT - This weekend boaters soaked up the sun on the Amite River days after it was shut down due to high water from heavy rains last week.

Jay Randall bought a boat for his family the day Ascension Parish shut down inland waterways.

"I was thinking this has to be bad luck. I buy a boat and they close everything down," he said. "Probably more frustrating is telling them we couldn't take the new boat out, cause they obviously wanted to go out in it immediately."

Randall's two young sons described waiting for the river to open up again as "awful." Saturday the Randall family finally got the chance to take out their new boat with the river open.

"We're finally getting out on the river after the river's been shut down about five days," said Randall. "They were all smiles this morning. Before we left the house they couldn't wait to get out here."

Randall says he's looking forward to more sunshine and even more chances to give his sons a memorable day out on the river.

"Just think about the memories that we make together on the river. You know, they're going to remember that for a life time. I want them to remember dad and their boat," he said.

Some debris like logs and branches still litter waterways, so Ascension Parish leaders urged boaters to be careful.
