Bills blocking former lawmakers from taking jobs rejected

Related Story

BATON ROUGE- A house committee killed two bills with one stone.  The bills would have kept lawmakers from leaving the legislature and going straight into other state jobs.

It has been a hot topic around the capitol for the past few months.  Several former lawmakers were given appointments to high paying jobs.

State Representatives Dee Richard and Pat Smith authored bills calling for a two year waiting period before legislators could take state jobs.  Some lawmakers complained the bills show guilt even when there is no problem.  Richard says he is trying to clean up the legislature's reputation.  Smith says the bills are what the public wants to see happen.

Blogger C.B. Forgotston says the jobs have become more important in recent years because of term limits.  He accuses lawmakers of lining up jobs in exchange for political support at the capitol.
