'Better Together' double-checking St. George petition
BATON ROUGE - As the registrar of voters office works around the clock and through the weekend to go through the St. George petition, another organization is also counting through signatures.
Better Together leaders have their hands on more than 4,000 signatures after putting in a public records request. They got to work with 8 volunteers starting on Saturday to go through the petition looking for duplicates and other invalid signatures.
"After about the first 500 names, we started getting a lot of invalid signatures, said Spokesperson for Better Together, M.E. Cormier. "Just like the last time, we had the exact same results like the registrar's office a 17 percent inaccuracy rate."
However, St.George supporters say it's about giving people the right to vote no matter the situation. Spokesperson for St. George Lionel Rainey was unavailable for an interview on Saturday but said this to our cameras on Thursday.
"One group is walking in to allow the people to be able to vote. Another group is walking in trying to stop people from being able to vote," said Lionel Rainey, St. George spokesperson. "It's been a long time in this country since such a massive effort has come forth to try to stop people from being able to vote."
