Better Block BR to shrink Government Street

BATON ROUGE - City leaders are temporarily shrinking a major Baton Rouge road to show off some changes they believe can help increase business and recreational traffic in the city.

The Better Block BR demonstration will shrink Government Street to two lanes with a center turn lane on Saturday and Sunday. It will show people what the area might look like with landscape buffered streets and more area for people to walk, ride their bikes, and sample local businesses.

"It would mean increased business opportunities, it would mean a different type of residential atmosphere, where instead of having to get in your car to go from point A to point B, it's a destination, people could walk and cycle and have a true community, a sense of place," said Camille Manning-Broome, an organizer with the project.

Volunteers will set up the demonstration early in the morning, which includes trees in the roadway to simulate a median.

"What we're trying to do is create a median with two vehicular lanes going north and south and then the street trees will provide a buffer for the bike lane," said Jeb Barber with Makaira Landscape.

The project will include dozens of "pop-up" shops, food and drink vendors, and several park areas.

The demonstration begins at 10 a.m. Saturday morning and will last until 5 p.m., it will continue on the same schedule on Sunday as well. The road will be increased back to its full size by Monday morning.
