BESE approves K-12 funding plan
BATON ROUGE - The state Board of Elementary and Secondary Education approved Gov. Bobby Jindal's school funding formula for the 2013-2014 school year, which protects his school voucher program.
Last year a judge ruled the funding formula unconstitutional. That case is on appeal with the state Supreme Court.
Today's debate over the public school funding plan included vouchers, as well as students with special needs. Some school superintendents urged BESE to reject the current plan, and adopt a formula used two years ago before the voucher plan was implemented.
Parents of voucher students defended the program. They say the scholarships which pay private school scholarships for students from low performing public schools are a benefit.
Opponents of the voucher program say pulling the money from local school districts could mean less resources on a local level. They claim that could hurt students with special needs and others.
