Beau Pre murder leaves students uneasy
BATON ROUGE - Police are looking for a gunman who shot a man in the Beau Pre neighborhood on Ducros Drive early Monday morning.
It happened around 12:30 a.m. in the college neighborhood.
"I heard the loud screeching noise and I thought it was a car accident or someone revving their tires," said William Everhardt, who lives nearby.
Police think Cleveland York III, 33, was shot in the back of the head while sitting in his Cadillac SUV on Ducros and then tried to escape, but ran into a fence and then into two parked cars in an adjoining neighborhood.
"Because of the smoke, I thought the vehicle was on fire, so I jumped over the fence to render aide and tried to remove the driver from the vehicle," said Everhardt, who then called police once he learned the man was shot.
Now residents are planning to do things differently to try and stay safe.
"It's really scary, we don't usually turn on our alarm, but now we'll definitely start doing that and locking our doors, I mean it's not something we usually have to do, it's just college kids living here, but we'll definitely be more safe," said Gabrielle Roberts, who lives near the shooting scene.
Police haven't released information on a motive or suspect, but ask anyone with info that could help to contact BRPD.
