Beach advisories ahead of Memorial Day
BATON ROUGE - The state issued beach advisories ahead of the Memorial Day Weekend.
There are 24 beach sites along the Louisiana coast. Sites are tested every Monday from April 1 to the end of October. Precautions are posted when the water quality is abnormal.
"It's not going to kill you, but maybe cause rashes," Gordon LeBlanc, who works with the Beach Monitoring Program for the state, said Thursday.
LeBlanc added, every year around this time, bacteria can be in the water. Swimming in water with high bacteria counts can make people ill.
This week, three beaches - Lake Charles North, Lake Charles South and Rutherford - were given posted advisories.
If there is an advisory, LeBlanc told swimmers to take precaution, especially if they have open wounds.
"If they have lesions, sores, open cuts, those would be the precautions you need to take if you saw an advisory up," he said.
Advisories are listed on the Department of Health and Hospitals website.
