Bayou Corne residents to meet with parish officials

Related Story

BAYOU CORNE- Tonight people who live near Bayou Corne attended a meeting with Assumption Parish officials and Texas Brine to find out what's going on with the sinkhole and relief well.

James Bergeron is one of the few in his neighborhood who stayed behind. He said many come back regularly to check on their homes and attend meeting like this one.

"I do not think these people know what's going on," he said.

His house and dozens of others are dangerously close to where a huge sinkhole was discovered near Bayou Corne three weeks ago. This came months after bubbles started roiling water in surrounding bayous.

Officials believe a salt dome failure on property owned by Texas Brine is to blame. Bergeron wants to know how things got to the point where a sinkhole developed before anyone did something about it.

"What are ya'll doing?" he asked. "Why didn't you see this before? It's just like all the sudden boom, ya'll gotta move out."

Bergeron said he won't be satisfied until officials tell him when this situation will be under control, and he can feel safe in his home once again.

"We're really concerned because nobody knows. They don't know, we don't know, nobody knows what's gonna happen," he said.

People who live in the evacuation zone started receiving relief checks from Texas Brine last week to help cover costs. The state is ordering the company to also make payments retroactive to the beginning of the evacuation order.
