BATON ROUGE- Before the famous Battle of New Orleans there was the Battle of Baton Rouge in 1779. Some people call it one of the lost chapters of Baton Rouge history, but it was important because it expelled the British from Louisiana and the Mississippi River.

During September the Capitol Park Museum is putting on an event to celebrate the battle's 236th anniversary. This morning Daniel Wilcox from the Audubon State Historic Site stopped by 2une In to tell us more about it.

The Battle of Baton Rouge took place during the American Revolutionary War on September 21st, 1779. Spanish Governor General Bernardo de Galvez lead an army of 1,427 soldiers to capture the British Fort in Baton Rouge.

The army of combatants was made up of French and Spanish settlers, Indians and African-Americans. They took the fort in an early morning bombardment which made way for the free passage of supplies on the Mississippi River.

The Battle of Baton Rouge commemorative program will be held at the Audubon State Historic Site in St. Francisville on September 19th and 20th. You can get more information by calling 225-635-3739.
