Baton Rouge welcomes new pope
BATON ROUGE - Cheers and smiles greeted the announcement of Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio of Argentina, the new leader of the Catholics.
The first pope from the Americas and the first pope to use the name Francis.
Principal of Our Lady of Mercy Catholic School Brian Moscona says the new pope is a humble man and a great leader for the world.
"A man of humility, conservatism and commitment to social justice," said Moscona. "Those are going to be great qualities in our next holy father."
Catholics are happy, and say Pope Francis will be celebrated.
A Vatican spokesman says Pope Francis will lead his first mass as the new leader Thursday.
"Very excited about it, very excited," said Wendy Hellinger. " Clearly the new pope sees his mission as rebuilding and strengthening the church world-wide."
