Ballet ticket trouble
BATON ROUGE - A holiday tradition is costing some ticket buyers a lot more money.
The Nutcracker, A Tale from the Bayou has four showings this weekend at the River Center, but the Baton Rouge Ballet Theatre says they've been getting complaints about high ticket prices.
Molly Buchmann, artistic director for the Ballet Theatre says there are a number of ticket sites offering Nutcracker tickets for double the cost. In some cases, on BatonRougeBoxOffice.com, tickets are for sale for $285 a piece, almost seven times the face value.
"Of course, our show is worth this much, our show is worth $280, but that's not what we're charging," said Buchmann.
Tickets sold for the Nutcracker fund the Baton Rouge Ballet Company for the year and have a face value of $20 to $45 a piece, but Buchmann read complaints from people on social media sites about the tickets being too expensive.
"We're finding dozens of people are going to these websites first, because they come up first when you search," said Buchmann. "They look like legitimate websites"
Baton Rouge Box Office is a secondary ticket site based in Connecticut. A representative says what they're doing is by the book and never guarantee the ticket will match the face value.
"We have to charge something, and we'd love to charge more, but we don't so that more people can come," said Buchmann.
The best way to get an affordable ticket is to purchase one from the River Center box office, the Baton Rouge Ballet Theatre company, or Ticketmaster.
