Bakeries prep King Cakes, burgers on Lundi Gras
BATON ROUGE - Bakeries in Baton Rouge are in crunch mode as they prepare thousands of King Cakes and other pastries to be shipped around the world.
Ambrosia Bakery said they've shipped around 3,000 King Cakes so far this Mardi Gras season, and have several hundred more being prepared on Lundi Gras.
The bakery packs the cakes with icing in on the side, so the people who get it can decorate it themselves.
"It shows the ultimate freshness as if they were in Baton Rouge buying it, when they actually open it up in another state and they can make it themselves, decorate it, plus it's a lot of fun for the kids that do," said Felix Sherman, Jr., co-owner of Ambrosia Bakery.
They also showed off a new Mardi Gras burger to News 2 today. It mimics a New Orleans food truck creation that's received nationwide attention.
"We're making the buns out of the same dough we make the king cakes with, we'll slice it in half, toast it on both sides, make your hamburger, and then we'll top it with the white icing and purple, green and gold sugars, it ought to be a hit," said Sherman.
