Baker water rates could go up

BAKER - The Baker City Council has started the process of raising water rates in the city to help pay down some debt.

Baker is in the red $2 million after upgrading its aging water system. Today during a work session, some council members suggest raising water rates by $3, which would make the standard rate $12 in the city.

The city borrowed money from state agencies to make improvements like adding electronic meters and drilling a new water well, at a total cost of $4.7 million. The extra three dollars will generate about $220,000.

Some residents aren't thrilled with the increase.

"I don't like it. One minute it's low, and now they want to raise it where people can't afford to live here," said Russell Guidry.

The Baker City Council could vote on the rate increase as soon as next week.
