Baker schools bracing for potential employee layoffs
BAKER- Baker school board members voted on Tuesday to allow the superintendent to reduce school workers if needed in July.
The vote is an effort to brace for the possibility of budget cuts.
Baker Public Schools Superintendent Herman Brister said that school administrators have been planning for months, for the potential cuts.
“Last minute crisis is one thing you want to try to stay away from,” Brister said.
“We're planning and have been planning since January. We want to go into the budget year with a sound physical plan and let all of our employees know ‘Look we're on solid ground,’ he said.
According to Brister the cuts will only happen if they are needed.
“We don't anticipate any big time layoffs or major layoffs, but here we don't know and it's the responsibility of the district office to make certain that our school district is viable going into the new school year,” he said.
Some parents, like Sarah Fields, said that she doesn’t want the possible reduction in staff to effect the students.
“I wouldn’t want to see any teachers lose their jobs you know because it's important for the kids,” Fields said.
However, Superintendent Bristle says administrators are being proactive so students will not be impacted.
“It's prudent for any leader to take proactive steps to minimize this impact on student achievement and families across the state as much as possible but there's no secret budgets are an issue,” Superintendent Bristle said.
The superintendent went on to say that he wants to make sure the school system abides by the law in giving employees proper notice in the event the layoffs do occur.
