Baker begins cleanup after Isaac rips off auditorium roof
BAKER - Wind from Isaac blew the roof off the Baker Civic Center last night.
City leaders told News 2 it took them by surprise, but they've already started to pick up the pieces. This morning they met to discuss how to repair the building, which is used for everything from administrative offices to weddings.
"In past hurricanes this has been a shelter during Gustav and Katrina," Baker Fire Department Captain Keith Pease said, "It's just one of them things that just happens."
"If you're gonna be successful during an emergency so that you're flexible enough for when the roof comes off city hall you can adjust," said Mayor Harold M. Rideau.
Officials are still assessing the damages, but so far they think it will cost about $500,000 to rebuild the roof.
Nobody was inside during the storm. All events scheduled there in the near future are canceled.
