Back-up QBs battle for No. 2 spot at Southern
Baton Rouge, LA - The Jaguars have 4-year starter Austin Howard at quarterback, but who's up next on the bluff?
Fighting for the number 2 spot: It's not something we talk about every day but here at camp for the Jags but it's a very important babttle at quarterback.
Austin Howard taking a break for the second half of practices this week to call plays and watch John Lampley and Glendon McDowell take snaps with the first team offense to see who's the quarterback of the future here on the bluff.
"We have to figure out who that two is and it's tough on a freshman but if you want to be that guy you have to get better. It's trial and error. Every one of those guys will do something good and do something bad, but it's whoever out of those guys wants to take the bull by the horns and run with it is going to be the guy that sits in that second seat," says head coach Dawson Odums.
Offensive coordinator Chennis Barry adds, "We know Austin is our guy but we want to get those guys to operate the machine with the first team, the number one o-line, recievers to give them a chance to have success. So we're going to rotate with John Lampley and Glendon McDowell and see what they can do."
"At the end of the day those guys are out there by themselves, I can't coach them all the time but I'm here as long as I can be. They did some things and messed up on some things but it's good they are getting reps," says Austin Howard.
"That was one of our goals coming into camp. We wanted to get those guys reps. We're not asking any of them to be a hero, we're just asking them to manage the offense and take what they give us."
Howard being a 4-year starter makes him irreplaceable, but Coach Odums hopes throwing freshman QBs into the fire during camp could help the Jags maybe find the next Austin Howard on the bluff.
Correction: Glendon McDaniel was incorrectly referred to as Glendon McDowell twice in the video above. McDaniel is listed as McDowell on the school's website roster for the football team.
