Authorities urge vigilance, unity after Sunday shooting

BATON ROUGE - LSP's Col. Mike Edmonson, EBRSO's Sheriff Sid Gautreaux and BRPD Chief Carl Dabadie are appearing at BRPD Headquarters on Sunday night with updates concerning the morning shooting that took the lives of three officers and wounded three others.

BRPD Headquarters is just a few miles from the site of the shooting, which happened at a car wash/convenience store near the intersection of Airline Highway and Old Hammond Highway just before 9 a.m.

Authorities provided little in terms of new information. One deputy remains in the hospital fighting for his life, while another underwent surgery and is expected to recover. Investigators say they feel certain that the shooter operated alone, but they would not name him and have yet to determine a motive. Sources have identified the gunman as Gavin Long, of Kansas City, Missouri.

Several media outlets have described the man as a "black separatist" based on the content of his social media posts. A pair of suspects taken into custody in Addis were released earlier Sunday night after they were questioned by Louisiana State Police.

While there is no active shooting threat still in effect in the city, EBRSO's Sid Gautreaux urged vigilance among the community.

With the situational awareness, Gautreaux says it's a time for prayer and healing in Baton Rouge. He said the community should strive for unity in order to avoid further tragedy.

Col. Mike Edmonson says all law enforcement agencies will be collaborating to bring justice in the case.
