ATC goes undercover

BATON ROUGE - A day after warning bars they'll be cracking down, Alcohol Tobacco Control agents used undercover operatives to look for businesses illegally selling alcohol to minors Thursday.

The strike came two nights before LSU's first football game. The Tigers open the season at home Saturday night.

"An alcohol permit in Louisiana is a privilege, not a right. In these types of establishments, I don't really have the authority to close a business, but I do have the authority to pull the alcohol permit," ATC commissioner Troy Hebert warned Wednesday. Hebert and his staff met with bar bosses across the city ahead of the busy weekend.

Thursday, two minors tried to buy alcohol at various locations around Baton Rouge. Most stores followed the laws, but some ignored obvious signs of being too young to buy alcohol or cigarettes and completed a transaction. Stores that broke the law were reprimanded.
