Assumption Sheriff's Office reacts to Waguespack's resignation

NAPOLEONVILLE - The Assumption Parish Sheriff's Office has a new leader after Sheriff Mike Waguespack resigned last night.

"He contacted me, called me over, again, it was somewhat of a shock for me," said Interim Sheriff Bruce Prejean, who was previously chief criminal deputy.

Waguespack made the announcement through an email, right before midnight.

In a phone interview, he told News 2 that he accepted an offer to be the CFO for RES Contractors, LLC.

“(Sometimes) opportunities in the private sector are a little time sensitive,” said Waguespack, who recently lost his re election bid to Leland Falcon.

"I would have liked to know," said Falcon, "I guess a little more warning would have been the choice."

Until Falcon takes office July 1, he and Prejean will be working together for yet another transition.

"Sheriff Prejean and I met this morning," said Falcon "we should wrap the interviews of the existing employees by Monday, [and then] we'll start working to get that team together rather rapidly."
