Assumption Parish declares emergency for storm damage
NAPOLEONVILLE - Parish officials declared an emergency after storms uprooted trees, knocked down power lines and damaged homes in Assumption Parish Monday.
The parish school system said all schools would close Tuesday because of the widespread power outages. All government offices and court cases in the parish Tuesday were also cancelled.
Sheriff Mike Waguespack said tarps are being handed out at the Road & Bridge office at 141 Highway 1008 in Napoleonville. The Red Cross set up a shelter at the Belle Rose Middle School, located at 7177 Highway 1, for people who can't stay in their homes. The shelter opened Monday evening at 6 and will be open overnight and Tuesday. Residents with weather-related needs can reach the Red Cross for more information by calling 1(800) 256-4733.
Governor Jindal also declared an emergency for Assumption and Lafourche parishes Monday in order to free up more state resources to help with damage assessment and cleanup.
More updates on shelters, tarps and road closures can be found on the sheriff's Facebook page. Anyone with questions or concerns can contact the parish Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness at (985) 369-7386.
