Ascension tax renewals support schools
GONZALES - Providing quality education in Ascension Parish could come down to a property tax renewal.
Saturday residents in Ascension Parish will head to the polls to vote on renewing or ending three school taxes that help the school district survive.
All three taxes account for over $31 million of the school district's budget. The renewals will provide teacher salaries, technology, and facility maintenance.
"Adequate resources help with everything. It saves time, it allows for better student engagement and it definitely helps the lesson when we have what we need," said sixth grade teacher Stephanie Cunningham.
Superintendent Patrice Pujol says without the renewals the district won't survive.
"It would devastate our budget. You think about $20 million out of our budget for teacher salaries. I would have to start laying people off. I wouldn't have any other option," she said.
Also on the ballot Saturday is a new tax for a fire protection district on the parish's east bank, and a renewal to help keep the Council on Aging running.
