Ascension Sheriff offers deal to Sorrento

SORRENTO- Sheriff Jeff Wiley thinks he can provide superior police protection for a fraction of what it would cost to reanimate the lifeless Sorrento Police Department.

City records show the town was willing to spend as much as $448,000 to outfit the Sorrento Police Department, but Sheriff Wiley says he can bring in four dedicated deputies, including overtime, for only $353,000.

"I would rather have the already made and ready to gear up team, because let's say something bad does happen, you would need those people there to be up and ready and ready to go any time, any place, any moment," said Sean Gros, who works at the Coffee House in Sorrento's Cajun Village.

In November voters will get the chance to abolish the Sorrento Police Department all together, which would trigger the Sheriff's protection agreement.

Though the Sheriff says his deal is only good if APSO is the exclusive provider of law enforcement services in the town, which means an elected Police Chief would need to hand over the reigns to deputies.
