Ascension schools get facelift after $100 million bond

GONZALES- Big changes are in the works for several schools in Ascension parish, thanks to a multi-million dollar bond the school board received in 2009.

Sophomore Kaitlyn Cayette tells News 2 the changes around campus have made quite an impression.

"I'm glad they've renovated the bathrooms because the bathrooms before was so nasty," she said, "and I'm glad they fixed the lockers. It's like we're in a new school."

In 2009, Ascension Parish voters approved a $100 million dollar bond to spruce up about 22 schools.  Donaldsonville High School received more than $1 million of that for renovations, electrical upgrades, and a new library which is still in the works.

"It makes me feel great knowing that Donaldsonville is doing a lot for our kids," said parent Olivia Gibson.

"As a student it makes me feel really good that they're doing these improvements because it makes me feel like they care about me more than they previously did," said Cayette.

Upgrades are underway at Gonzales Primary School, one of the oldest schools in the parish, as well. Right now they're in the middle of a $9.2 million construction project which will completely change the face of the campus.

"This building has been here since the 1930's," said Assistant Principal Roddy Melancon, "so for the students to be able to now have a state-of-the-art building is great."

Next on the to-do list is $15 million in work for a complete overhaul of Prarieville Middle School. Construction hasn't begun yet because past bids have been over budget.
