Angola celebrates prisoners' achievements
ANGOLA - The Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola did something this week they haven't for three years: hold a graduation celebration for nearly 400 inmates.
Graduation ceremonies took place Tuesday and Thursday at the prison, with some prisoners receiving their GED and others getting certification in various fields.
State Warden Burl Cain said they hope through the re-entry program to cut down on crime in the state.
"Somebody won't be a victim because of what you see here today," said Cain.
The prison offers 20 courses, from plumbing and welding to automotive and carpentry. According to officials, the goal is for prisoners to become productive citizens in society and avoid returning to a life which would bring them back to jail.
