Ammonia leak sparks lawsuit
BATON ROUGE- An ammonia leak in Baton Rouge sparked a lawsuit against an ice manufacturer.
The incident happened last week at Reddy Ice near downtown, when ammonia leaked from one of the coolers. It forced people living within a two-block radius of the business to evacuate.
Residents living nearby say they weren't notified of the leak, so around 300 filed a lawsuit against the ice company for lack of notification and safety concerns.
"It's just not showing any concern about us in the neighborhood," said resident Maria Williams. "I've been here all my life as well as a couple of my neighbors, this is our home, we should be notified."
Joel Porter is one of three attorneys representing the residents affected by the leak, and also lives just feet away from Reddy Ice.
"This is not the first time that this has happened in this community. Obviously this company is more concerned about profit over people," Porter told News 2.
"I'm sure it they don't take better care of it... it will happen again," Williams said.
