Alabama's Kevin Steele named LSU def. coordinator
BATON ROUGE - A spokesperson for LSU athletics confirmed that Alabama assistant coach Kevin Steele has been hired as the Tiger's new defensive coordinator.
Michael Bonnette confirmed the hire Tuesday afternoon. Steele replaced John Chavis, who left LSU for a post at Texas A&M shortly after the Tigers' bowl game appearance in December.
Head football coach Les Miles called Steele a proven recruiter, noting he helped sign Alabama's No. 1 class a year ago.
"This is a great hire for us," Miles said. "He has a great defensive mind and he's an outstanding recruiter. He knows our players and our system and his knowledge of the SEC and the SEC Western Division makes him a great fit."
Steele was coaching inside linebackers for the Crimson Tide before he was picked up by LSU. He's been coaching in the SEC, ACC and NFL since the 1980s, and was previously defensive coordinator at Clemson University from 2009 to 2012 and Alabama in 2007. He was also named the Rivals.com National Recruiter of the Year in 2005 at Florida State, after helping the Seminoles sign the top class in the country that year.
