AG denies Port Allen mayor's request for legal opinion

PORT ALLEN - Attorney General Buddy Caldwell denied Port Allen Mayor Deedy Slaughter's request for a legal opinion regarding alleged wrongdoing in her office.

Slaughter sent a letter to Buddy Caldwell last month asking for an opinion on three issues: raising her salary by $20,000, taking a taxpayer funded trip to Washington D.C., and hiring her brother-in-law as her chief of staff.

In the letter from the Attorney General, several issues were cited for not issuing an opinion to Slaughter.

The letter stated, "it is the policy of the Attorney General not to furnish opinions on questions of fact or on matters where the relevant facts are in dispute."

It also said, "the issues which are the subject of your request are matters either under investigation by local or federal officials or are the subject of pending or imminent litigation."

News 2 asked Slaughter about the investigation into her office last week.  She said she was proud of her work as Mayor so far and was not worried about it.

"I'm the person that I am," Slaughter said.  "I'm living the life that I live and I have no issues or concerns about it."
