911 tapes reveal details in deputy involved shooting

DENHAM SPRINGS - Released 911 tapes reveal what happened when a domestic dispute turned into a violent standoff in Denham Springs earlier this month.

The confrontation on Country Club Drive turned deadly after an estranged husband, 46-year-old Sidney Averett, broke into a house after a court appearance, according to Louisiana State Police. Inside the house, Livingston Parish Sheriff's deputy David Johnson and the man's ex-wife hid from the attacker.

Johnson used his radio to detail what happened inside the house to dispatchers and deputies.

JOHNSON: 338 to dispatch. He just pulled back in the drive.

JOHNSON: 338, dispatch...He's got guns!

Johnson and his girlfriend then flee to the back of the house as the estranged husband starts to shoot at them through a wall.

JOHNSON: Shots fired! Shots fired!

DISPATCH: 10-4 shots fired Country Club Dr 30817, Country Club.

DISPATCH: We have shots fired. One deputy on scene.

JOHNSON: Need some help!

That's when investigators say Johnson fired back at Averett through the wall, hitting him twice.

"At this point he's like any other citizen," said State Police TFC. Jared Sandifer. "He has a right to defend his life and the lives of the other people in the home as well."

DEPUTY: David, where you at?

JOHNSON: I'm in the back bedroom. He's still firing. He's in the hallway.

DEPUTY: Do you have a window you can get out of? JOHNSON: 10-4, back window, back window, back at the corner.

Johnson and his girlfriend then escape from the house through a bedroom window.

DEPUTY: OK, I got two people out the house. I got David and the female out of the house.

DEPUTY: We still got the bad guy inside. We got a perimeter established. We're waiting on some more assets.

After the escape, investigators say Averett took his own life with the house surrounded by deputies.

"Authorities did hear a single gunshot. We believe that was a self-inflicted gunshot wound by Mr. Averett to himself," said Sandifer.

Investigators say the incident is a clear-cut case of self defense. Investigators plan to release more information in the next few weeks.
