79-year-old wakes to find burglar inside her home
BATON ROUGE - A 79-year-old woman said she lived the worst nightmare of her life after going to sleep Wednesday.
At some point overnight, Aynn Murray said she woke up and found a man in her home, rummaging through her things. She said he was helping himself to clothes and a television.
"I watched him pick up some scarfs like this, and then he put them back down," Murray told WBRZ reporter Brett Buffington.
Murray said the man, later identified by police as Izeah Johnson, first broke into a shed on her property to get a ladder to reach a window and knock out a window a/c unit. Once inside her home, Murray said he stole the TV and three purses but left the scarfs.
"I pray for him, and I'm doing this [interview] because I don't want this to happen to any other woman who lives by themselves," she said.
Murray, who lives alone, hopes her story will help people realize no one is immune to crime.
Johnson was arrested by an observant police officer who happened to be across the street. They found his DNA and shoe prints on Murray's property. The man is homeless, police said.
Murray added, while she prays for Johnson, she'll also be praying about making a decision on purchasing protection for her home.
