$5 million project to raise levee between BR, Iberville Parish

Related Story

ST. GABRIEL- A stretch of levee just north of town, continuing across the Iberville-East Baton Rouge Parish line, is being "lifted" and fortified to protect people from the roaring Mississippi River.

Dirt is being added to the top of the levee to raise it a few feet.  The project has a price tag of about $5 million.

Currently, three miles is being repaired.

The work comes about two years after the historic high water event of 2011 when the Army Corps of Engineers became concerned with the height of the levee in this area.

"Where there are deficiencies and concerns, then they address those issues so that's why the three mile area is being addressed," explained Monica Salins, the Executive Director of the Pontchartrain Levee District.  "The levee district had trap bags in this area."

The area is known as Manchac Bend, and is "a tight bend in the river," she added

The Army Corps of Engineers put $4million up for the project.  The Pontchartrain Levee District added the extra $1million.

The project will fill both the flood side and the protected side of the levee, bringing it above the design height for the area.

The project is expected to be complete by the end of 2013.
