WHISKEY BAY - State police say two people died in Friday's crash involving four 18-wheelers on I-10.

I-10 eastbound is still closed, but westbound opened at around 11am Saturday morning.

Traffic is being diverted at I-49 to US-190.

State Police say the four trucks were traveling eastbound on the Basin Bridge near the Whisky Bay exit Friday at around rush hour. The drivers were Ricky Chester, 56, from Ohio, Darren Robinson, 44, from Baton Rouge, Bernadin Rojas-Soriano, 43, from New Jersey, and Derrick Moss, 24, from Mississippi.

Police say Chester and his wife Karen Chester riding with him died as a result of the crash. They were pronounced dead on scene.

Investigators say Chester didn't stop when he came up to traffic congestion. Chester's truck hit the back of Robinson's vehicle, causing a chain reaction that led to the four truck pileup. Robinson's trailer dislodged and went over the guardrail to the ground below. The other three trucks stopped on I-10. As a result of the crash, Chester's and Rojas-Soriano's trailer caught fire. The reason Chester didn't stop is still under investigation.

Robinson suffered minor injuries and the other two drivers were not injured at all. Alcohol is not believed to be a factor for the three surviving drivers.
