15-year-old suspected burglar freed from chimney of March Street home

BATON ROUGE- The parents of a juvenile who was caught trying to break into a house Friday but got stuck in a chimney could face charges.
Juvenile Prosecutor Curtis Nelson said his office is currently doing an assessment on the child. He could not identify him due to his age or talk about specifics in this case. However, he was able to tell WBRZ what typically happens when juveniles come in.
Right now the District Attorney's office is looking into whether this was an isolated incident or a pattern of criminal behavior for the juvenile.
"We want to evaluate whether the parents played some role in the child's behavior," Nelson said. "We can also prosecute parents for encouraging their children to engage in delinquent behavior."
In this particular case, we know the child was supposed to be in school.
"Whenever a juvenile comes in to our system, we look to see if there is any history or pattern of behavior, or anything that would indicate whether there is something that would contribute to why this child is acting out," Nelson said. "We will make an assessment as to whether we should bring charges against the parent."
The assessment could take a couple of weeks. The parents could face misdemeanor charges.
