14-year-old shot, killed in East Baton Rouge
BATON ROUGE - The East Baton Rouge Coroner's office confirmed a teen shot in the parish earlier Tuesday has died.
Family members said 14-year-old Brandon Bindon was shot in the side on N. 48th near Gus Young. Relatives said Bindon was unresponsive when EMS took him to the hospital.
Neighbors living in the area said they were saddened to see violence happening at the beginning of summer, when children are out of school.
"It's very upsetting," said Mandrea Smith, who's lived in the area for 70 years. "I've been back here all my life and it's disgusting to see the children killing themselves like this."
Twyla Crawford knew the victim, and said she's shocked by the news.
"It's scary because I have kids out here," Crawford said. "They are growing up like this, watching this, this is what they know."
The shooting happened in Councilwoman C. Denise Marcelle's district. She said more needs to be done to get the community to care to stop the senseless shootings.
"First of all we have to come together and say we have to stop the violence," Marcelle said. "Secondly, we have to find things that young people can do like jobs, and things to help them to be better people and take a sense of worth for their neighborhood."
Police said they're investigating, but haven't released any additional information.
