BATON ROUGE- The capital region can expect even less of an issue from Tropical Storm Karen, which weakened in the last weather update issued Friday.

Sustained winds decreased to 45 mph meteorologists said just before 10 p.m. It was moving north-northwest at 7 mph. It is expected to weaken even more by the next update Saturday morning at 4.

The storm continues to approach the Gulf Coast, which spent the day bracing for troublesome weather.

Some areas of Louisiana were evacuated and inland parishes issued emergency declarations because of closeness to lakes.

As the weather situation decreased throughout the day Friday, a hurricane watch was dropped. A tropical storm warning was in effect from Morgan City, La., eastward to the mouth of the Pearl River. A tropical storm watch stretched from the mouth of the Pearl River eastward to Indian Pass, Fla. and includes the New Orleans area.

Along with strong winds, the storm was forecast to produce rainfall of 3 to 6 inches through Sunday night.
