ZACHARY- The city of Zachary could soon take possession of some state roads inside the city.
City officials asked the state to let them take over portions of La. 64, Old Baker Road, and East Central Avenue.
If the agreement is approved the city will receive more than $7 million. The state would bring all the streets up to standard before turning them over to the city. The agreement would also include all bridges and traffic lights along the roads.
With the money, Zachary plans to build a by-pass around the town that will help ease traffic.
"This is going to allow us to stay ahead of the curve with our traffic," said Chris Davezac, with Zachary Public Works Department.
The deal could be finalized as early as next week.
