BATON ROUGE - A man was booked on his sixth DWI charge after he allegedly caused a car crash Saturday.

According to the Baton Rouge Police Department, 38-year-old Shannon Bennett was driving in the city Saturday night when he failed to yield as he turned left onto Plank Road.

Police arrived on scene and spoke to Bennett, who had a strong odor of alcohol emanating from his breath. Police also noticed a small plastic bag of a "green, leafy substance" in the vehicle.

Police noted that Bennett performed poorly on a field sobriety test, adding that his speech was slurred and he was struggling to stand up straight. Police also spotted a handgun on his waistband. Bennett then refused to submit a breath sample and was taken into custody.

After further investigation, officers discovered that Bennett had previously been arrested on DWI charges on five different occasions over the past 12 years.

Bennett was charged with driving while intoxicated, failure to yield for a left turn, illegal carrying of a weapon, and possession of marijuana.
