ZACHARY- The National Weather Service says damage in the Zachary area is consistent with straight line winds, not a tornado.
Meteorologist Mike Efferson says a tree that snapped in half, damaging a home and vehicle, fell from west to east, the same direction as the Christmas Day storm. Efferson says a tornado normally sends debris in several directions.
The family was not home at the time the tree fell.
Across town, volunteers helped clean up around the Church of the Burning Fire on East Central Avenue. Winds knocked over a sign in front of the church. Volunteer Vincent Perry says it is a blessing the storms did not cause additional damage.
Weather experts say storms are not unusual this time of year, but the widespread damage across the south is rare.
