Some Zachary city leaders said speed van operations aren't living up to expectations.
The Arizona-based company Redflex operates van and trailers in the city. It is equipped with automated cameras that record and photograph speeders. A citation is then mailed to the vehicle's owner.
Some council members said the vans are not stopping speeders. Mayor Henry Martinez said a large percentage of people are not paying their fines. The latest numbers from Redflex indicate there is $427,000 in fines that are more than 120 days late. Martinez said another concern is the amount of money going to Redflex for operations.
Martinez said the council may consider terminating the contract later this year. He said there is support for the program on the council and in the public.
Speed vans have been used in Zachary since the beginning of last year.
