ZACHARY- Zachary city officials confirmed their plans to provide fire protection for all of District 1 in East Baton Rouge Parish. It's part of a move they say will save taxpayers more than $200 thousand dollars a year.
The district board recently voted to allow Zachary to collect all of the fire tax money in exchange for full coverage. District 1 is an area that includes the Jetson Center for Youth in the northwest corner of the parish.
Baker Fire Department leaders say they will continue to respond to calls in the area when asked. Zachary Mayor David Amrhein does not expect fire ratings or response times to be affected by the change. He says Baker may be reimbursed for individual calls based on FEMA emergency rates.
