MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - West Virginia University athletic officials say a record number of students have requested tickets for Saturday night's football game against No. 2 Louisiana State, and several thousand may not get them.
Sports marketing director Matt Wells says 17,056 students requested tickets. That beats the previous record of 15,064 for the 2008 season opener against Villanova.
Wells tells The Daily Athenaeaum that only 11,000 student seats are available, but WVU issues 12,500 tickets to account for no-shows.
Athletic officials announced Tuesday the game is a sellout.
Student tickets are free but issued using a lottery system. They have until midnight Wednesday to claim them. After that, unclaimed tickets will be up for grabs.
Both teams are undefeated, and the matchup is the prime-time highlight of ESPN GameDay.
