Workers hailed as heroes after rescuing 3 from burning home
METAIRIE- Six employees of Jefferson Parish's Streets Department have been honored for rescuing three people from a burning house earlier this month in Metairie.
Ricky Walker, Rickey Addison, Keith Ellis, Paul Ellis, Don Cunningham and Randy Bass received certificates of merit from Jefferson Parish President John Young Wednesday.
On the morning of June 12, the men arrived at a house to pour a concrete street slab and noticed smoke and flames coming out of a nearby home.
The men called 911 and helped an elderly couple and their caretaker to safety. They also alerted neighbors to the emergency.
When firefighters arrived to douse the blaze, the men helped hook the hose up to the fire hydrant.
At the ceremony Wednesday, Jones hailed the men as heroes.
