LAKE CHARLES - A worker sealing off an abandoned natural gas well in the Gulf died this morning after a fall, according to authorities.
A spokesperson with the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Regulation and Enforcement said the worker with Alliance Oilfield Services died when he fell through a deck opening around 4:00 a.m. He was treated by emergency responders on the scene and then flown to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The spokesperson said the well, owned by Hilcorp Energy Company, is about 129 miles offshore south of Lake Charles and hadn't been in production since 2008. Alliance Oilfield Services was hired by Hilcorp to plug and abandon the well when the fall happened.
BOEMRE inspectors tried to fly to the platform this morning, but weren't able to reach it due to fog. The spokesperson said they'd try again tomorrow to conduct an investigation into the accident.
