BRUSLY - A long-distance phone call led authorities to find a Brusly woman who had been trapped on her kitchen floor for seven days.
Police said Winniford Braxton, 51, fell in her bathroom Friday, and couldn't get up. She's recovering now in a local hospital, and authorities said they're making changes to make sure it doesn't happen again.
Braxton's sister, Sandra Cobb, said she was concerned about her sister after she hadn't heard from her in more than a week. Cobb lives in Texas, and contacted the authorities to check on her sister.
"I really didn't expect her to be ill or sick," Cobb said. "But when she wasn't checking her messages, that's what clued me in and I knew something wasn't right."
Dispatchers worked with Cobb to find Braxton's address, and sent an officer to check her welfare. Tom Southon said when he arrived, he knew right away something was wrong.
"I heard a woman screaming from the outside," said Tom Southon with Brusly Police. "She yelled, 'I'm back here I'm back here.'"
Southon said they knocked the front door open and found Braxton lying in the kitchen. He said Braxton had been dealing with health issues recently which left her too weak to get up and call for help.
"She actually fell in the bathroom Friday and army-crawled so she would have access to food and water," he said.
Brusly Police said they plan to monitor Braxton's home more often to make sure nothing like this happens again.
