PLAQUEMINE –A man whose kidnapping and rape victim went with him to check himself into a Baton Rouge mental hospital was arrested Friday after he left the hospital, authorities said.

The victim remains in intensive care with devastating injuries from the brutal attack. Iberville Parish Sheriff Brett Stassi said she will require months of treatment and multiple surgeries.

Joshua Penny, 33, was booked Friday into Iberville Parish jail on counts of first-degree rape, false imprisonment and battery.

Stassi said Penny was arrested by East Baton Rouge deputies as a fugitive when he left the hospital in Baton Rouge.

He is accused of taking the woman against her will and holding her captive for 24 to 30 hours in a pickup truck in a remote part of Iberville Parish. During that time, he violently and repeatedly assaulted her, Stassi said.

He did some pretty horrible things to her,” Stassi said.

He spoke to his family members while he was holding her and she and the family persuaded him to seek help at a hospital. The victim accompanied him to a hospital and her injuries were discovered there, Stassi said.

She got treatment and a rape exam in Baton Rouge and some time passed before deputies in Iberville were informed of the attack, Stassi said. They got warrants to search his vehicle and ultimately got the warrant for his arrest.
