Woman found dead in prostitution hot spot was charged in the past
BATON ROUGE - An investigation is underway to determine who killed and left a woman half naked in a field, but neighbors in the area say that area was a hot spot for crime.
Authorities have identified the victim as Brooke Ashley Crawford, 30. Investigators say she sustained multiple gun shot wounds and was left in a grassy field on the 1500 block of Gracie Street.
Neighbors familiar with the area told WBRZ News 2 that people would post up tires as barriers to block people and cars from getting into their yards and having sex or doing drugs. Locals claim the area is a hot bed for prostitution and drug usage.
It's unknown if the woman was currently associated with possible street work, but she has been arrested on prostitution charges in the past. Crawford was booked during a sting operation when deputies say she requested $18 and a Coors Light baseball cap in exchange for oral sex.
According to crime statistics collected by the Baton Rouge Police Department, the area has more than 100 documented incidents of crime. In the past year, there has been 16 robberies, 29 burglaries and 19 aggravated assaults.
Police say the victim lived in Baton Rouge. There is no word yet whether her death is linked to prostitution in the area.
Anyone with information about this shooting should call the BRPD Violent Crimes Unit at (225) 389-4869.
