Witnesses: child froze when she saw train; was hit and killed
GONZALES- A 6-year-old was hit and killed by a train Tuesday evening. It happened on Tobey Street.
According to police, Shantell Patterson was walking home from the park with her sister and a group of other kids when she tried to be the first across the tracks as a freight train was moving toward her.
The engineer blew the horn, but witnesses say Patterson froze when she saw the train. It couldn't stop, and hit her- knocking her several feet away from the tracks.
KCS, the company operating the train, will pull the locomotive's black box for more information.
