White suggests phase-in of Common Core
BATON ROUGE - Louisiana Superintendent of Education John White wants to slow down the implementation of tougher educational standards.
White wants a 10 year phase-in for the Common Core standards on school grades, teacher evaluations and student promotion.
The proposal will be considered by the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education next month.
There has been increasing criticism of the state's use of the Common Core by lawmakers, parents and teacher unions.
The standards were adopted by BESE in 2010.
They have grade-level benchmarks for what students should learn in English, reading and math.
