GULLANE, Scotland (AP) - Lee Westwood is just 18 holes away from claiming his first major championship. The talented 40-year-old English golfer shot a 1-under 70 to take the lead after the third round of the British Open.

Westwood's 3-under total put him two shots up on playing partner Tiger Woods and Hunter Mahan (MAY'-han).

Woods was tied for the lead with Westwood when he hit his second shot on the par-5 17th into bunker and bogeyed the hole, while Westwood birdied. Woods shot a 1-over 72 to tie Mahan for second place.

Mahan equaled the best round of the day with a 3-under 68 on the difficult, dried-out Muirfield course. That earned him a pairing in the last group with Westwood in the final round.

Masters champ Adam Scott is alone at even par after a 70. Zach Johnson and Angel (AHN'-hehl) Cabrera head up a group at 1-over.

Phil Mickelson is five back after shooting a 1-over 72.
