BATON ROUGE - According to recent tests, the amount of mosquitoes carrying West Nile Virus has increased.

"They are terrible, and have been very, very bad," said resident Willie Mae Williams.

They're so bad, she avoids outside activity as much as possible.

"I couldn't come out in the afternoon when it gets cool, you want to come out and work in the flowers."

Each week, the East Baton Rouge Parish Mosquito Abatement and Rodent Control collects mosquitoes and tests them for West Nile Virus. Last weeks test showed that out of every 1,000 mosquitoes 11 are affected with the virus. They said the virus usually starts showing up in people when they see 6 out of every 1,000 mosquitoes affected.

"The potential for a serious issues is here because this is much higher rate of infection than we've had in a number of years," says Matt Yates with the EBR Mosquito Abatement.

To help curb mosquitoes his office is increasing their daily sprays. Residents can also get their yards sprayed for free.

Issac and Rose Greggs called once they heard that West Nile was on the rise.

"I hear that, and I get real concerned, not only for us, but our children and everyone else, even our neighbors, it can cause so many bad things," said Rose Greggs.

And to keep those pesky insects from around your house, get rid of all standing water. If you don't, your house could become a breeding ground for mosquitoes. For more information or to get someone to spray for mosquitoes, call EBR Mosquito Abatement at
